NO SPRINKLES???

Look out cause these are on their way...Pizza Cones.

They have been popular over in Japan for several years and some bright investors down in South Carolina are bringing them to America.

The cones which resemble pizza crust are going to be made right here in Indianapolis and then distributed to other areas of the country where they will be filled with pizza toppings and then served fast food style. They are a "walking" pizza.

What do you think!

SO MUCH FOR SUPERIOR GENES

I spent the entire weekend thinking that I'm so happy that I can entertain myself because The Husband was under the weather and between fits of sneezing, he slept all day Saturday and Sunday.

I was also feeling a little smug because I had not caught the bug! Superior genes! Eating fruits and vegetables. Getting plenty of rest!

So Monday morning rolls around and he is feeling better and heads off to work.

And me???

I hope you don't catch it through the intertubes!!!

POPCORN TAKEN TO THE NEXT LEVEL

I think I was one of the few who weren't watching the Oscars last night. I did record it so I could catch the few moments I was interested in today...mainly anything with Hugh Jackman in it! lol I hadn't seen any of the top movies this year and really didn't have a horse to cheer on in the race.

So...speaking of races...I watched the NASCAR race from Fontana, California while the Oscars were on. And any one who says it never rains in California has never been to Fontana apparently! This is the second year in a row that the race was rain challenged! But yesterday they were able to get it in on Sunday and my Mikey ended up with a very respectable 15th place and was one of only 17 cars that were still on the lead lap. So with his 8th place finish last week, he is in a very good place in the standings for this year!

These races are usually about three hours long and I usually plan a little snack to have while I watch. Popcorn is one of my favorites...easy and lots of satisfying crunch.

I like to dress my popcorn up on occasion and have a few standbys that I enjoy. One of my favorites when I want a treat is just tossing a bag of just popped corn with a tablespoon of dry sugar-free gelatin powder...raspberry is my favorite! But never when I'm knitting! Purple fingers and wool just don't go together!

Then there is the spicy combo of salt, cinnamon and chili powder I came up with for my Butternut Squash Chips. That is really good on the 100 calorie packs of kettle corn since it adds a little sweetness along with the spice.

I'm definitely going to add this recipe to my list: Chili Lime Tequila Popcorn . I found it at Heidi Swanson's blog and the idea of popcorn with lime juice and zest, a touch of tequila, minced jalapeno, cumin and red pepper flakes just made me salivate! Can't wait to try it!

I made up a double batch of my Asian popcorn for the open house we had for Christmas Eve at my daughter's house and I loved it. After seeing Heidi's version, I think the little time in the oven would probably benefit the Asian version if it weren't eaten right away and I will probably add that step next time I make it and will be storing it away for later.

ASIAN POPCORN
1 Bag Microwave Popcorn
1 Tbsp black sesame seeds
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp salt
3 Tbsp butter, melted
1 Tbsp dark sesame oil
Pop the popcorn and remove the unpopped kernels. Combine the butter and sesame oil and pour it over the popcorn and toss around to coat the popcorn. Then sprinkle the sesame seeds, mustard powder and salt over the buttered corn and toss again.
Note: I'm going to throw in some Wasabi Peas, too.
Don't do this too far ahead of serving.

A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT

I grew up on a farm where I was raised to expect good quality chicken raised right there on the farm. When it was time to have a chicken dinner, we first had to catch the chicken! And those chicken had dark meat on the thighs and legs because the chickens ran around all day looking for food. The breasts weren't super large because they had not been selectively modified for that feature. And the flavor of the meat sometimes reflected what the chicken had been eating...wild garlic or onions!

The pork began with piglets raised by my dad until they were a suitable weight and then they were butchered by a fella called "Horsefly" who knew what he was doing...all the local farmers said so! The sausage we ate was ground pork seasoned by my dad with salt, pepper, and just the right amount of sage. The hams and shoulders were sugar cured right there on the farm.

We never had to worry whether or not the meat we ate came from healthy animals or what they had been fed because we supervised the operation.

But then I left the farm and began the process of relying on supermarkets for our meat and it was never quite the same. The texture, flavor, and even the color of the meat was different.

We've recently discovered a market near us with meat raised the way my dad did it and it is such a pleasure! Since we began buying from them a few weeks ago, we take a bite of humble ground beef and just look at each other with "Isn't this the best!" looks.

Tonight I'm splurging and I'm going to fry a chicken we bought from them. The difference became clear when I unwrapped the chicken and found a whole chicken with the neck still attached. I had to get out my sharpest knife and disjoint it myself! I haven't done that in years!

The skin looked rich and had a healthy layer of fat...necessary for flavor! The leg and thigh meat was a little darker than what I've gotten used to. I put it in a bowl with salted water this morning after cutting it up just like my mom used to do. I can't wait to taste the finished product tonight. I'm hoping it will be similar to what I ate as a kid.

And I think the next chicken will get a nice bake with lemon, olive oil, and oregano...Greek chicken as my mom prepared it!

These local farms are beginning to crop up more and more across the country. They will admit themselves that some of their products cost a little more than the supermarket equivalent, but other products are pretty comparable. And we've found that we are satisfied with less of a good product and are happy with a smaller portion served up with good sides.

We have made an effort in recent years to take our business to small local merchants when we can in an effort to support the local economy and this farm will be another beneficiary of our purchasing power.

STUFFED CABBAGE CASSEROLE

It is another gloomy and chilly day here in Indiana and I decided I wanted something hot from the oven for supper...something I could prepare early in the day and forget...a casserole!

This is one of my favorite casseroles...my Lazy Day Casserole version of Stuffed Cabbage from my Potluck Recipe site. I won't copy it here since I did a pretty thorough accounting of all the things that can be done with the basic recipe at the time. So just click on the link and travel over there for the big picture.

I'm going back to my movie and some knitting!

CEREAL...A DESTINATION MEAL

When my younger daughter moved to Bloomington, home of Indiana University, she found herself in the midst of little restaurants featuring food from just about everywhere in the world...probably the closest you can get to New York ethnic cuisine here in Indiana.

But their choice of Sunday morning eating out with the kids was a cereal bar where they could choose from an assortment of cereals, toppings, and flavorings. The kids loved it!

These bars have opened up across the country and are attracting kids and adults, apparently!

I visited the menu page of The Cereal Bowl and I can see why. They had three trademarked cold cereal combos featured that would attract the attention of parents and kids alike.

  • Morning Glory--Frosted shredded mini-wheats, strawberries, almonds, and walnuts
  • The Sweetest Thing--Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Vanilla wafers, and Rainbow Sprinkles
And these hot choices that I would choose in a minute!
  • Dad Knows Best--Oatmeal, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries
  • Mom Knows More--Oatmeal, Apple pie filling. caramel sauce. and graham bites
  • Bounce Banana Bounce--Oatmeal, banana, brown sugar, graham bites, and banana syrup
And these seasonal favorites:
  • My Sweet Pumpkin Pie--Oatmeal, pumpkin pie filling, maple syrup, and graham bites
  • Strawberry Cheesecake--Oatmeal, strawberries, cheesecake filling, and graham bites
And if you wanted to have a custom blended, healthy cereal choice at home there is:

me & goji has an internet site where you can begin by choosing a base of oats or flax or whatever you like from their many suggestions. You then go on to add your choice of dried fruits, nuts, and seeds. It is fun to just visit the site and see the great choices available. It gets the creative juices flowing whether or not you order from them or not. They also figure the nutritional value of the cereal you create.

Of course, a trip down the cereal aisle of the supermarket is enough to make you dizzy! There's a new choice almost weekly...some better than others.

We tend to keep the old standbys for the most part...Raisin bran, Cheerios, Shredded Wheat. And something freaky for the grandkids! Of course, Grandpa can be counted on to empty the box if they haven't been here to finish it in a while!

DEAR MERRILL LYNCH...GIVE ME MY MONEY!

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask,
'Where have I gone wrong?'

Then a voice says to me,
'This is going to take more than one night.'

**************************************************

Just feeling cranky today. Anytime I have to deal with corporate America I know I am going to be miserable to be around.

You can't reach a person anymore. You are stuck on the phone trying to decide which of the categories they want to place you in will be the right one. I always want to shout, "I don't know!!!" or "HELP"!

Or they are trying to herd you to the on-line site which is fine for general information but totally useless when you need to speak to a person!

There are probably a handful of things that go directly to my short-fuse and this is one of them.

My husband is great at handling this type of thing. After almost 40 years we have sorted through our particular strong points and play Good Cop/Bad Cop with an expertise born of loads of experience. It does come in handy when sparks begin to fly from my eyes and my words begin to take on a particular edge that he can step in and say, "What my wife means is...". It has probably saved me from court appearances...lol!

But today I must handle the calls myself since they are my investments and they have no interest in speaking to him. Drat and Double Drat!

But you all just go on and have a nice day in my absence! Now where is that phone number?

IT'S BACK TO THE RACE TRACK!

Back to NASCAR racing at Daytona today. This is the premiere points race for the 2009 season and I wish my favorite driver, two-time Daytona winner, Michael Waltrip, the best of luck! Mikey has survived some of the most horrendous crashes in NASCAR history, including this one in Bristol in 1990:

But he has managed to keep a sense of humor in spite of the danger which is evident in this NAPA commercial where they mock the same Bristol crash!

BEWARE!

Just wanted to share this information I found on another blog this morning. It seems that the old saying, "Let the buyer beware!" needs to be expanded to include the seller as well.

Did you just sell your car? If the dealership you sold your car to goes under because of the economic crisis, you may find that you’re still on the hook for that car loan:

The national wave of auto dealership closures has come crashing down on thousands of people who are on the hook for used-car loans that dealers were supposed to absolve.

When a car buyer still owes money on a vehicle he is trading in, the dealer promises to pay off the outstanding loan, then resells the vehicle. But as more dealers go out of business, some are sticking consumers with the bill. Lenders can then go after the previous owner who thought the debt was paid, or repossess the car from the new owner who assumed it came with clear title.

"It’s devastating for people when it happens because they have two car payments and they can’t afford them," said Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, a Sacramento-based nonprofit that lobbies on behalf of vehicle owners. "Their credit is destroyed for no fault of their own because the dealer defaulted."

THERE'S STILL OATMEAL

I just read that Moody's Investors Services has come up with a short list of familiar companies that might not make it through 2009 and look who's on that list:

Krispy Kreme. (KKD; about 4,000 employees; stock down 50%). The donuts might be good, but Krispy Kreme overestimated Americans' appetite - and that's saying something. This chain overexpanded during the donut heyday of the 1990s - taking on a lot of debt - and now requires high volumes to meet expenses and interest payments. The company has cut costs and closed underperforming stores, but still hasn't earned an operating profit in three years. And now that consumers are cutting back on everything, such improvements may fail to offset top-line declines, leading Krispy Kreme to seek some kind of relief from lenders over the next year.

Can we live without Krispy Kreme???

My older sister Polly, God rest her soul, used to drive me crazy by having one doughnut with her morning coffee on Saturday mornings. She said that was all she needed to get her past her longing for a doughnut.

I always felt the first doughnut was the warm-up act. Let's face it...doughnuts are way too easy to scarf down. I can easily eat one in 4 bites...there is practically no chewing required...and you can wait 20 minutes to see if you are still hungry after eating one and I'll bet your sweet blood sugar that you will be!

Me? The Husband laughs at me because I always tell him that a KK is not safe within my reach!

So...will I be happy if they go belly-up? Not really. I hate to see any business fail because there are so many good people who have to face the failure along with the business.

And, besides, it won't help me much anyway cause Indianapolis is the home of Long's Bakery and everyone in Indy knows their doughnuts are more addictive than KK's!!!

A LITTLE SONG FOR DADS AND SONS

My son-in-law introduced me to this song the other day and I thought it was such a great tribute to the magical moments between Dads and Sons that I wanted to share it with you!

The lyrics:
Well, I'm rumblin' in this JCB.
I'm 5 years old and my dad's a giant sitting beside me.
And the engine rattles my bum like berserk
While we're singin' , 'Don't forget your shovel if you want to go to work!'

My dad's probably had a bloody hard day
But he's been good fun and bubblin' and jokin' away
And the procession of cars stuck behind
are gettin' all impatient and angry, but we dont mind.

An' we're holdin' up the bypass
woah
Me and my dad havin' a top laugh
oh-woah

I'm sittin' on the toolbox
woah
And I'm so glad I'm not in school, boss
So glad I'm not in school

Oh no

and we pull over to let cars past
And pull off again, speedin' by the summer green grass
And we're like giants up here in our big yellow digger
Like zoids, or transformers, or maybe even bigger

And I wanna transform into a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
And eat up all the bullies and the teachers and their pets
And I'll tell all my mates that my dad's B.A. Baracus
Only with a JCB and Bruce Lee's nunchuckas

And We're holdin' up the bypass
Woah

Me and my dad havin' a top laugh
Oh whoa

I'm sittin' on the toolbox
Oh
And I'm so glad I'm not in school, boss
So glad I'm not in school

And we're holdin' up the bypass
Oh

Me and my dad havin' a top laugh
Oh whoa
I'm sittin' on the toolbox
Oh

And I'm so glad I'm not in school, boss
So glad I'm not in school

ANOTHER RIP-ROARING SATURDAY AT THE SMITH'S

My husband has been talking about going ice-fishing with his buddies for weeks now. It is a sport he loved and enjoyed every winter when he was younger, but as age and decreased circulation to his feet took hold, he has gone less often.

He gets the gear out every winter and has it ready to go and the guys talk it up over hot coffee at work, but then the evening or weekend comes and they seem to get very busy with other things.

I always thought it was a dangerous sport here in Indiana where we don't have continuous day after day freezing weather. The lakes never have a chance to develop the thicker ice that they do in the frozen north. And many of them are spring fed and have a variety of thicknesses in the same lake. While the men picture the scene above, I'm afraid I've always pictured the one below!
So...I was kinda glad to hear that he was forsaking another fishing trip this weekend. Sometimes it is nice to have those old boots under the table!

The Husband is one of those guys who doesn't take well to too much leisure. He always has something to piddle with out in his garage. I don't know how many lures he has made this winter while he's been out there staying busy.

But he does enjoy his NPR radio shows on Saturday!

It begins with Car Talk with the brothers who talk like my Jersey brother-in-law and have infectious laughter to go along with their advice on keeping your car running.

It moves on to A Way with Words which is interesting but makes me want to slap the people who call in and are kvetching about the precise way to use a particular word. I can imagine that they are at my dinner table critiquing the grammar of all those who are dining with them and being the most obnoxious people ever!

These are followed by Whad'ya Know and Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me which are nearly indistinguishable in my mind but do have funny moments when Mo Rocca or Paula Poundstone are on...and I don't even know which show they are on!

Then there is a break before Prairie Home Companion comes on...I only like the news from Lake Wobegone...and then the Vinyl Cafe. When that is over, Saturday is pretty much over for The Husband as well and he usually drags off to bed so he can wake up at 5 for no good reason on Sunday morning!

We are exciting people...NPR and jig making balanced by the occasional NASCAR race and knitting!

As my younger daughter would say...WOOT!!!!!

And for all the hardworking members of our Congress, I offer up the following quote:

"Furious activity is no substitute for understanding."

HAPPINESS IS A BRITISH SERIES!!!

I'm here long enough to say hello and then I have to rush off to my latest addiction:
I can not wait to get back to the Eliott sisters and see what happens to them next! I had not heard of this British series but was introduced to it by Netflix who decided we were made for each other after I had viewed a number of British flicks in a row.

Well...I just have to thank Netflix for the introduction and tell them they probably should get into the dating service business cause they sure know how to match people up!

This was a series that aired between 1991 and 1993 and follows the lives of two sisters in 1920's London who open and operate a fashion house.
My own parents were married in the 20's and the pictures of my mother in her short flapper hairdo and dresses have always made me smile.

I love the costumes in the series and the characters range from high-society matrons to the seamstresses who work long hours to make a living to the down trodden who must live on whatever is bestowed on them by the more charitable in the group.
The series was made by the same people who did "Upstairs Downstairs"...my next series to watch...and does the same great job of letting us see both the differences and the similarities of the various classes.
There are 36 hour long episodes and I am making my way through them as I knit sock after sock for the granddaughters and to put back as little gifts for friends and family.

And while I'm singing the praises of Netflix...one of the few companies who is actually thriving during these hard times!...just let me say that I love their service. I know there are probably people who have bad things to say too, but their service since I began with them has been superb. I opted for the package that allows you to have three DVD's at a time and between their fast turnaround on the movies and the ones you can watch instantly, I have never been without something to watch since I signed up. I can put a DVD in the mailbox for return on Monday, it gets picked up from my box about 3 in the afternoon, I will get an e-mail that it has been returned the next morning, another e-mail by afternoon that my next one has shipped, and by Wednesday afternoon I am watching the next one!

House of Eliott

And...my NASCAR boys are back! The Budweiser Shootout is Saturday night and Daytona is next Sunday afternoon! VROOM VROOM!!!

Have a great weekend!!! Have some fun doing what makes you happy!

A MEME IF YOU'D LIKE

I decided I wanted to start a meme today since it is snowing and cold AGAIN outside and because I am bored and...especially!!!...I am nosy!

So, if you want to make me happy, join in on the fun and leave me a comment so I'll know to go to your blog and see what you've come up with.

Just link back to me, answer the following questions, and then invite a couple of people to join in!

1. Show me the picture you have on your desktop.

This one is called "Baking" and I just put it up yesterday. I try to change mine once a month or so. This one makes me feel warm and cozy...like I stepped back in time to the 1950's!

2. What book are you reading?

Actually, I usually have a couple going at once. I keep one in the bedroom to read before I go to sleep. Right now that is Evan Thomas and Newsweeks account of the 2008 election. It has lots of behind the scenes stories about both Obama and McCain's campaigns and since I'm a political junkie, I love reading all that.

The second book is near "my chair" in the living room where I can read while The Husband is watching television or if I'm between projects. This one is Apple Pie by John T. Edge. He has written several books about the culture of eating and recipes in America. I have always wondered at the eccentricities of our regional foods and he is a great story teller!
3. What is the last new recipe you tried?

Mine wasn't so much a recipe but a sweet potato pie that I made up because I had bought a big bag of sweet potatoes that were marked down at Meijer's and had decided to bake all at once. So here I was with several cups of scooped out sweet potato goodness. I froze some for later and then decided our simple supper needed a pie to turn it into something a little better. I had a crust left over from Christmas baking and a can of evaporated milk in the pantry. I added the milk, a couple of eggs, a mixture of 1/2 cup white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar, a sprinkle of salt, and two teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice along with a teaspoon of vanilla to about three cups of the mashed baked sweet potato and turned it into the crust. I baked it at 375 for about an hour and it was heavenly!
4. When was the last time you really laughed?

When I saw this cartoon...a post-recession boob job!
5. What is your favorite television show?

I have several that I really like, but the one I can't wait to see again is Mad Men.
It reminds me of a time when I was a teenager and was a live-in Mother's Helper for the local doctor and his wife. I went to my senior year of high school during the day, but I lived with them and helped with the three children before and after school through the week and went home to stay from Saturday noon to after school on Mondays. They lived a more upscale life than our family did with cocktail parties, exotic foods, and all the latest LP's of musicals like Camelot and West Side Story and comedians like Bob Newhart's Buttoned Down Mind. It was an education for me and this show reminds me of it.

6. What is your favorite blogsite?

Tina Brown's "The Daily Beast" and especially the Cheat Sheet! It is a one stop perusal of what is happening in the world!

7. Guilty pleasure?
It is mindless if you want it to be and fun to play with the grandkids! They always beat me!!!

IN A BREAKFAST STATE OF MIND

I have eaten breakfast for every meal today. Nothing else sounds good and I hope I'm not coming down with that awful stomach flu that everyone my husband knows seems to be suffering from.

But it was my usual whole wheat English muffin toasted crisp and spread with the end of the jar of chunky peanut butter with my morning coffee. And for dessert I was watching the Super Bowl edition of "The Office" that I DVR'ed last night.

I LOVE THESE TWO CUTIES!!!
I was even smart enough to set the recorder to catch the hour following the show so I wouldn't miss anything in case the game ran over.

Since NBC decided to keep with the post-game even after the stadium had emptied, The Office began about 10 minutes late and I was ok with that knowing that I was covered...but to my shock, when I went to switch out to the next recording, instead of the end of my show, the local affiliate had cut away to talk to Tony Dungy!!! It was not the way to start my day!

So, mid-afternoon, I decide I don't "feel like" lunch and decide what I need is a nice bowl of Cheerios with milk! And it was so good!

And when I got to planning for dinner, nothing interested me either. What I really wanted was a pancake! But my husband had been working all day and I needed to give him a meal that was a little more substantial than that! So I ended up giving him some meat and rice that I had prepared in the freezer and I went on to fix that pancake I wanted. I'm in the middle of doing so when The Husband asks if I only made one which translated means, "I'd love to have a pancake even though I just told you I didn't want one!" Luckily for me, I knew that he'd have to have one after he smelled mine cooking and had planned for a second one!

So...he ended up with the odd meal and I had just what I wanted!

You know, the older I get the more I realize that there are foods that I just want to make myself. We had a chance over the weekend to have chili from a local diner that is famous for theirs and I turned it down, cause frankly, I just like my own version! The same is true of meatloaf, salmon patties, and pancakes!

I don't care for puffed up cakey pancakes and they don't have to be from scratch. In fact, I love the mix I buy at Aldi's. I make them rather thin and I like for them to be crispy around the edge. I don't want much of anything on them...often, I just end up eating them with a little Smucker's sugar-free blackberry jelly on top or I have squeezed lemon or orange juice on them and sprinkled a little powdered sugar on top! I really don't want them drenched in syrup!

My day of breakfasts has about come to an end and I have to say that it was pretty good. Perhaps I'll do it again tomorrow!
