I read this hint somewhere yesterday and decided to incorporate it into my meal plans...begin each dinner meal with a vegetable...either soup or salad.
It will get you off to a nice start to the meal, will provide another serving or two of vegetables, and it will take the edge off your hunger so you can eat a smaller portion of the more calorie dense dinner meat or pasta and still be satisfied.
I began last night's dinner with a cup of Italian Wedding Soup from Campbell's Select Harvest line. (Try them...lots of different flavors and way low in fat and sodium!) A cup of hot soup takes a while to eat and knocks off some of that 20 minutes it takes for your body to register that you are full. It also gave us a little time to talk and enjoy the meal. All too often, we rush through dinner to get on to the next event...often just The Husband heading to the deck with the dog to enjoy a few minutes of cigar smoking and enjoying some fresh air!
We went on to have a new recipe of pork loin cooked with peaches and a nice sauce over basmati rice that I had put in the crockpot early in the day. It was really good and we both left some of our moderate portions on our plates because we were feeling full.
We sometimes have a little pre-dinner snack if it is going to be awhile before we eat. The Husband eats lunch at 11a.m. and comes home hungry! One of our favorites is a glass of tomato juice and some raw vegetables with Laughing Cow cheese wedges.
I think most of us watched Monday's Oprah show and one of the things I brought away from it was Bob Greene's assertion that those of us with weight problems are always looking for "The Cure" and sometimes feel that the battle is over once we lose weight but the truth is that we will have to deal with the problem the rest of our lives whether or not we keep the extra weight off.
I've always felt in my own battle with weight that losing the weight is probably the easier part. Being overweight at least provides motivation for doing what needs to be done, but once the weight is gone, the weekly reward of seeing those numbers go down on the scale is gone too. Maintenance is like marriage after the honeymoon period...you have what you worked so hard to get and now you have to learn to live with it!

wow
an ah ha moment for me when you paralleled the maintaining with the marriage post honeymoon.
we celebrate our 11 year anniversary this weekend :)
That's one of my "tricks" too. I always serve something raw before a cooked meal. Sometimes it's salad, sometimes just a few crudites (a great way to get kids to eat veggies - they love dipping)or half an avocado, but most evenings these days we have a glass of freshly extraced carrot, apple and beetroot juice about 30 minutes before supper. It's amazing!
You might enjoy the zucchini soup recipe I devised the other day and posted on my blog yesterday.
I wish I could have seen that Oprah episode...
MizFit...Those marriages require daily maintenance, too, to succeed! Right? Happy Anniversary, btw!
Hanlie...There are recaps at Oprah.com!
That looks so good, and brilliant, brilliant, brilliant lol funny how we're all alike yet so different in our approach..maintaining has never ever been a problem for me. It's the dieting part...well right now, my life is different and it takes a different view...oh well, I can always come over here and get wise ;)
Lorraine...We are all different. How do you say it in French? Viva la differance???
The hard part of maintaining for me has been to stay on top of the 5 pound gain. I gained it last summer and it just was not going away. I was beginning to get comfortable with it too. Then I decided I wanted to deal with it. I know all too well how getting comfy with an extra 5 pounds leads to another 5 and another 5. Then before long it's 20 or 30.
Getting in my fruits and veggies is not my problem. It's my dairy. So I'm off to have some homemade non fat yogurt for breakfast!
Noelle...Way back when I had a yogurt maker that made 6 little cups and it was so good that I had to fight with the girls to get any of it!
Sounds good. Are you posting that crock pot recipe?
Grammy...just click on the words "new recipe" in red above and it will take you right to the recipe on my other blog.
I love the quote - I guess it's all in finding that small niche between the two... I hope it doesn't take a lifetime to find!
I think I definitely need to take the advice about eating something healthy before a meal - I need all the help I can get to get my veggies in...
Briana...It has been way too long since I heard from you last! Good luck with everything you have planned for 2009! And thanks for commenting.
I've never thought about having a cup of soup or a few raw veggie before my meal. I think I'll try that.
You cracked me up using "cigar smoking" and "fresh air" in the same sentence. LOL!!!
I think the two most difficult things about getting rid of lbs. is #1 getting started and #2 keeping it off. I look forward to getting 3 solid on track weeks behind me. I look forward to an eventual battle to keep the weight off. I go to my first 2009 WW meeting tomorrow. I've gotten off track the last couple of days. Blame fatigue or blame the devil. I'll blame both. Tomorrow is a new start. Soup is an excellent idea.
JC...that one slipped by me! But I guess since he's sitting on an open deck that the amount of fresh air surpasses the amount of stinky cigar fumes! (But that is why he is outside with the cigar and not inside!) lol
Arlene...Let's blame the devil and I'll send some good vibes your way! We're all in this together, right?
I always begin my dinner with a huge huge helping of broccoli or cauliflower that is steamed, it helps to fill me up and eat less dinner. Also a trick I've learned on meals, is if a recipe calls for 1lb of meat, I'll use 3/4lbs instead, you really can't tell the difference, and your shaving quite a bit of calories.
Kate...That is an excellent idea! And I have even eliminated the meat altogether at my husband's request...especially in casseroles.
